Are you currently working in the healthcare field in a role that involves direct contact with patients? Many nurses and other healthcare professionals are required to administer Intravenous Therapy to their patients as part of the treatment regimen. IV Therapy is used to deliver blood-based products, blood substitutes, buffer solutions, and other medications directly into the patient’s vein.
Vista College offers an Intravenous Therapy professional development program that provides the training you need to master and demonstrate your proficiency in this essential skill. The program is offered at our Amarillo, Beaumont, College Station, El Paso, Killeen, Longview, and Lubbock, TX campus locations.
Comprehensive 12-Hour Program Delivered Over Two Days
The Vista College IV Therapy training program primarily focuses on IV procedures, uses, and regulations. The course is broken into two six-hour sessions covering two days. The instructional method is evenly divided between classroom lecture and real-world application. It takes place in a laboratory setting to provide a well-rounded training experience. During the laboratory portion, you will watch and be able to practice various IV procedures. The course outline includes:
- Practices of Intravenous Therapy
- Safety and Infection Control
- IV Supplies and Equipment
- IV Fluids, Components, and Compatibility
- Preparation and Patient Communication
- Monitoring and Maintaining Intravenous Therapy
- Documenting and Discontinuation
- Intravenous Therapy Calculations
The IV Therapy course grading process features a system ranging from 4 (grade of “A”) down to 0 (grade of “D” or “F.” A grade for professionalism is included. This grade consists of factors such as timeliness, attendance, attire, attitude, accountability, and leadership. In order to pass the course, you must attain an overall grade of “A” (at least 90 percent), or “B” (a minimum of 80 percent).

In order to enroll in the IV Therapy training program, you must have a High School Diploma or equivalent (GED). You must also be a graduate of a nationally accredited allied health or nursing program, or be able to document relevant work experience in a healthcare setting. This professional development course is exempt from oversight by the Texas Workforce Commission, in accordance with Texas Education Code, Section 132.003.
